In April 1999 Kinnerton became the first manufacturer in the world to address the problems of Nut-contamination in chocolate products by creating a NUT FREE ZONE in our factory in Fakenham, Norfolk. Well over a million people suffer from Nut Allergy and for many, the problem of Anaphylactic Shock can prove to be fatal. On average every school in the country has children who are allergic, so parents who don't normally have to worry about such things, have to be extra vigilant even when buying for birthday parties or for chocolate to be taken to school. Kinnerton's Children (and Adult) products have very clear statements about our position on Nuts - the vast majority of our lines have this statement:
Because we also produce marzipan, pralines, walnut and other nut products, we still have to have a warning on any product that is produced on the same production line which, of course, will not be in our Nut Free Zone; in these circumstances you will still get a very clear and visible statement from Kinnerton like this: NUTS Unlike so many companies, we do not tuck our warning statements away in a list of ingredients or between a crumpled up piece of foil. Our assurance to our customers is clear and concise. So what is special about our Nut Free Zone?At a cost of well over £1 m a wall has been put down the factory floor and warehouse to make two entirely separate areas and all the production lines have been moved. The people working on the Nut production lines dress in a yellow uniform and those working on the Nut-Free lines dress in white. This means that all staff have to have both sets of clothing so that they can work in either section of the factory so instead of having just one locker most staff now have 5, yes 5, in which to keep day shoes, work shoes, yellow clothing, white clothing and outdoor clothing! Our engineers who work on the machinery now have to have two different sets of tools - red ones for Nuts and green ones for Nut-Free because if a spanner has been used on the Nut line it must NEVER, NEVER be used on the Nut-Free line. The carton erecting machine that was used to make Walnut Whips and a pack of ordinary solid milk chocolate can no longer be used for both products, so, like many other machines in the factory and at the expense of many hundreds of thousands of pounds we have had to duplicate it. Examples of special additional capital and equipment that has had to be purchased are:
Our staff can no longer even go to the canteen for a cup of tea or coffee without changing out of their special coloured uniforms, leaving them in their lockers and then putting them back on before they start work again and, of course, we have separate canteens, toilets, first aid rooms, development kitchens and engineering workshops. These are just some of the many things we have had to do to make Kinnerton 'Nut Free' chocolate safe for those people who suffer from a Nut Allergy to enjoy. You might also wish to know that Kinnerton Nut-Free products are available in private label format for companies such as Marks & Spencer, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury and many others. For further information please contact Ann Stebund for UK Enquiries and Paul Valon for Australian enquiries. By the way, Kinnerton Jelly and Sugar Confectionery products are available with natural colours and flavours, so look for this logo on the back of our packs as well.
